WOBURN — Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons announced Monday that the MassGOP is proud to be honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and focused especially on Dr. King’s message of love and understanding.

“More than a half-century later, Dr. King’s words and spirit still remain, and rightfully so,” Lyons said. “Dr. King knew that to understand someone, you had to try your best to walk a mile in their shoes, and that message is sorely needed today.”

Bruce Chester, an African-American Republican from Gardner who ran for legislative office for the first time in November, said he can remember from an early age his father’s respect and admiration for Dr. King.

“Dr. King has always been a hero of mine, right up there with my dad and Jesus Christ,” Chester said. “Dr. King knew that the greatest power against racism was unity, and that message came through loud and clear in his words.

“One thing my father would always remind me is how Dr. King never once complained. Never once did he point fingers. Dr. King knew that doing so would serve only to further divide

“Today, I pray we remember and honor that message of love and understanding, because we as a nation need to not simply remember it, but put it back into practice in our daily lives.”
