MassGOP Voices Concern over Boston City Councilors’ Proposed Congestion Pricing

February 14, 2024

Today, the Boston City Council will engage in a debate regarding the implementation of congestion pricing for drivers in the city. This discussion arises amidst concerns about the already high cost of living in Massachusetts, particularly in Boston. Notably, in New York City, congestion taxes can amount to as much as $15 for those entering and exiting the city. Amy Carnevale, the Chairwoman of MassGOP, has offered commentary on the stance taken by the Boston City Councilors regarding this matter.

“Implementing a congestion charge would directly impact Boston residents reliant on commuting to work by car. Following the footsteps of New York, Bostonians might encounter a hefty $15 or more fee for their daily commute. Such a measure is unsustainable and unfair, particularly for individuals compelled to drive in and out of the city for work purposes daily,” stated Carnevale.

“Additionally, Boston hosts several leading hospitals in Massachusetts. For individuals undergoing cancer treatment, accessing essential healthcare could result in substantial costs. We must adopt a realistic perspective on automobiles. While Democrats often perceive cars as luxury items, they are, in fact, indispensable for Massachusetts residents. I implore the city council to prioritize measures that enhance Boston’s affordability rather than unfairly burdening those who do not share their political views through disproportionate taxation,” Carnevale concluded.
