BARNSTABLE, MA–This month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been active on Nantucket, arresting five illegal immigrants classified as “violent offenders” for committing sex crimes against minors. These heinous acts are both appalling and shameful. These individuals should never have been in the United States in the first place, and the incidents themselves are a direct consequence to our broken immigration system. Members of this tight-knit community are terrified that these individuals were walking freely among them. Notably silent is State Senator Julian Cyr, who has yet to make a single statement regarding the arrests in the very community he represents.
Chris Lauzon, candidate for State Senate for the Cape and Islands, provided comment on the arrests and the deafening silence of Senator Cyr stating, “It is outrageous that individuals in the country illegally at the time of their arrests were not immediately handed over to ICE but were instead allowed to post bail and return to our communities. I cannot fathom why any court would ignore ICE detainers for those who have committed such heinous crimes. The Democratic supermajority’s failure to protect our communities is inexcusable.”
“Senator Cyr’s silence in the face of this crisis highlights a staggering lack of leadership on Beacon Hill—he refuses to even acknowledge the problem. As the next State Senator for the Cape and Islands, I will fight for policies designed to protect our communities,” Lauzon concluded.
