MassGOP Demands Action: Attorney General Campbell Must Defend Voter Mandate and Legislative Accountability
December 11, 2024
Boston, MA– The Democratic supermajority in the Massachusetts Legislature has brazenly claimed that auditing its operations falls outside the Auditor’s jurisdiction—an assertion that blatantly undermines the authority granted by the voters. Yet, Attorney General Andrea Campbell has refused to take a definitive stance on this critical issue, dismissing it as “not her place” to weigh in.
This failure of leadership is unacceptable. When disputes arise between branches of government, the Attorney General has a duty to step forward, uphold the rule of law, and provide clarity to the public. Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly supported this measure, and they deserve assurance that their mandate is being respected and enforced.
MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale issued a sharp rebuke, stating, “Attorney General Campbell should take a stand, defend the voters’ mandate, and ensure legislative accountability. Her silence not only erodes public trust but also raises serious questions about whether she’s avoiding this issue to protect the Legislature from political fallout.”
Carnevale continued, “This is straightforward. Massachusetts consistently ranks among the least transparent governments in the nation. Residents are fed up with backdoor deals and legislators operating in secrecy. Auditor Diana DiZoglio recognized this and offered a ballot question that voters overwhelmingly endorsed. The government must prioritize the will of the people over shielding their own interests.”
“It’s time for Attorney General Campbell to choose—defend the people’s mandate or remain complicit in the Legislature’s attempts to avoid accountability. The people of Massachusetts deserve better,” Carnevale concluded.
