MassGOP Slams Rep. Fernandes’ Campaign Events During Working Hours In Final Weeks of Legislative Session

July 18, 2024

Boston, MAIn response to Plymouth & Barnstable State Senate Candidate Fernandes’ recently held two campaign events during work hours in some of the busiest weeks of the legislative session, the Massachusetts Republican Party’s Leadership released the following statement:

“Rep. Fernandes’ judgment was on full display here, and he is simply not ready for a promotion. To hold two campaign events, one with his legislative colleagues, and another with Governor Maura Healey, during work hours, and one of the busiest weeks of the legislative session, just goes to show you that he’s more interested in campaigning than in conducting the people’s business,” said MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale.

“To further demonstrate Mr. Fernandes’ lack of judgment, he made one event—meant for canvassing—‘not-complimentary.’ Rep. Fernandes also believed that his volunteers should have to pay him in order to canvas on his behalf. Perhaps this idea was hatched in consultation with Rep. Chris Flanagan, a co-host of Fernandes’ event, who was recently found to be in violation of OCPF regulations,” Carnevale added. “It’s appalling to me that a Democratic candidate would publicize the fact that he pulled himself—and several house colleagues—away from their public duties, especially during the final weeks of the legislative session,” she added. “This lack of judgment demonstrates Fernandes’ unreadiness for higher office and shows he would continue to waste taxpayer money.”
