MassGOP Calls Out Unchecked Budget Increases: Senate President Spilka’s District Sees Secret $500K+ Boost

Boston, MA– Right before the budget reached Governor Healey’s desk, Senate President Karen Spilka increased funding earmarked for her district by over half a million dollars. This nearly tripled the amount originally approved for two projects in her district, all behind closed doors in a conference committee without a single vote by the House or the Senate. These additional funds contribute to a total of $12.4 million in taxpayer dollars allocated to the top 10 Democrat legislators.
MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale commented on the sudden increase, stating, “This, unfortunately, is nothing new under the Democratic supermajority’s rule. It’s completely demoralizing that top Democrats can score preferential treatment for their districts while newer members and those who don’t fall in line see significantly less funding.”
“This underscores the urgent need for an audit of the legislature to expose these closed-door meetings where power dynamics overshadow fairness and community needs. It also highlights the importance of electing more Republicans to balance the Democratic supermajority’s overwhelming control over state funding and initiatives,” Carnevale concluded.
