BOSTON — Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted along party lines in favor of a resolution formalizing the impeachment process against President Donald Trump:

“Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and Rep. (Jim) McGovern are in for a wake-up call if they think partisan impeachment proceedings driven solely by politics is a winning strategy for 2020,” Lyons said. “With their vote, our all-Democratic Massachusetts Congressional delegation has shown that their top priority is to divide Americans.”

McGovern, who authored the resolution, along with Pelosi, made the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and its chairman, California U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, the de facto impeachment conductor. Prior to 2019, all House impeachment investigations have been led by the Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee, according to the Democrats’ rules laid out in the resolution, will not be involved until Schiff submits his report.

Added Lyons:

“McGovern and Pelosi have now formally turned the impeachment keys over to Schiff, a guy who lied about meeting with the so-called ‘whistleblower,’selectively leaks information from closed-door meetings and deliberately misleads the public,” Lyons said. “Thankfully, American voters will be the ones issuing the final verdict next November and not vengeful Democrats like Schiff and McGovern, who clearly haven’t gotten over their party’s rejection in 2016.”
