MassGOP Calls for Resignation of Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, Citing Wasteful Spending

Call to Resign Comes After Goldberg Drops Appeal of O’Brien Suit

BOSTON, MA — Massachusetts Republican Party Chair Amy Carnevale on Friday called for State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg to resign, citing the millions of dollars wasted in her lawsuit brought by Cannabis Control Commission Chair Shannon O’Brien and wasteful spending in other areas of her office.

 

Goldberg was previously told by a state judge that she committed “clear error” in accusing O’Brien of gross misconduct, but chose to continue appealing O’Brien’s wrongful termination suit until it became obvious that she had no viable path forward.

 

The “bricks” of Goldberg’s case against O’Brien, the judge concluded, were as “thin as playing cards.”

 

“Treasurer Goldberg has been in office 11 years, and in that time she has managed to turn a thriving arm of state government into the capital of out-of-state junkets and Cadillac catering. Her lackluster defense for firing Commissioner O’Brien is just the tip of the iceberg,” said MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale. “Since it’s not her money, she doesn’t care.

 

“There is a pattern of apparent negligence and disregard, from junkets and holiday meals to credible reports of nepotism in her office. She abused her position by allowing cronyism and waste to flourish.

 

“It’s no wonder why Republicans are eager to introduce a serious challenger for the Office of State Treasurer in 2026.”
