MassGOP Response to Governor Healey’s SJC Nominee Appearance Before Governor’s Council

February 21, 2024

Gabrielle Wolohojian, nominee for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and former romantic partner of Maura Healey, faced questioning today from the Governor’s Council in anticipation of the vote to confirm her nomination to Massachusetts’ highest court. The nomination of Wolohojian was made by the Governor and a select group of advisors, marking an unprecedented move.

MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale, commented on the hearing stating, “Regardless of whether the judge opts to recuse herself from issues involving the Governor or the Executive Branch, the impropriety of this nomination remains unchanged. It’s difficult to conceive that the personal relationship didn’t impact the nomination process. In submitting a nomination to the highest court, a Governor must avoid even the semblance of a conflict of interest, and this nomination fails to pass that critical test.”

“The fact that Governor Healey chose to restrict the nomination committee to a select group of rubber stamp advisors is just wrong. I’m sure the committee anticipated the controversy surrounding this nomination; nonetheless they proceeded, seemingly emboldened by the Governor’s perceived unaccountability within the state. Concerns have been raised among residents regarding this decision, highlighting the necessity for the administration to exercise greater caution in such matters,” Carnevale concluded.
