MassGOP: CAN HEALEY KEEP IGNORING JOB LOSSES?

As layoffs mount and residents flee Massachusetts, how much longer will the governor blame Washington while other New England states thrive?

BOSTON — Notices filed May 8 with the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act show another 283 layoffs are planned across Massachusetts, with cuts hitting workers from Pittsfield to Boston and from New Bedford and Brockton to Lincoln.

This week, roughly 170 additional layoffs were announced at companies in Littleton and Tewksbury, the Lowell Sun reported. Those cuts follow hundreds of layoffs announced by Massachusetts employers earlier this month, the Boston Herald reported.

The Massachusetts Republican Party is once again calling on Gov. Maura Healey to address the underlying conditions driving employers to shed jobs in the commonwealth.

“Gov. Maura Healey has been in office for nearly three and a half years. It is long past time for her administration to prioritize policies aimed at retaining jobs here in the commonwealth,” said Amy Carnevale, Chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party.

The wave of layoffs comes as Boston posts the highest office vacancy rate in the Northeast, with roughly one in four downtown office spaces sitting empty, according to the Boston Business Journal. At the same time, Massachusetts continues to lose residents — and billions of dollars in personal income — to lower-cost states, recent reporting shows.

“With 24% of Boston’s office spaces empty and residents leaving the state, we can’t afford Gov. Healey’s policies,” Carnevale said.

“It is disappointing once again to see the Healey-Driscoll administration cast blame on

Washington, D.C., while other New England states are thriving. This latest report cries out for bringing back balanced leadership in Massachusetts.” she concluded.
