MassGOP Responds to Arrest of Boston’s Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins

BOSTON, MA — Massachusetts Republican Party Chair Amy Carnevale responded to the arrest of Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins by U.S. Attorney Leah Foley on charges related to extortion of a cannabis business.

 

“Once again, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley is stepping in to expose corruption by Democrats in Massachusetts. Sheriff Tompkins allegedly used his position of public trust for personal gain, thus violating his oath of office. The arrest of Sheriff Tompkins reminds us that one-party rule in Massachusetts has been ineffective in preventing and exposing corruption and extortion by Democrats in offices from city council and state representative to county sheriff,” said MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale.

 

Background:

• On Friday, U.S. Attorney Foley announced that Tompkins, who has served as Boston’s Democratic sheriff since 2013, was arrested on charges of extortion involving the purchase of an equity interest in a Boston-based cannabis company. (DOJ, 8/8/25)

• Earlier this year, Foley arrested Cape Cod Democratic State Rep. Chris Flanagan on charges related to wire fraud and stolen funds. (DOJ, 4/11/25)

• In May, former Democratic Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe after being charged by Foley. She is awaiting sentencing and resigned from office last month. (DOJ, 5/5/25)
