Massachusetts Republican Party Statement on Retirement of Robert Hedlund as Mayor of Weymouth

BOSTON, MA — The Massachusetts Republican Party expressed its gratitude to Robert Hedlund, Mayor of Weymouth, after he announced on Tuesday that he will be retiring on July 15.

 

Mayor Hedlund previously served as State Senator for the Plymouth and Norfolk District from 1991 to 1992 and 1995 to 2016, rising to Assistant Minority Leader before winning the race for Mayor of Weymouth in 2015.

 

Earlier this year, Mayor Hedlund used President Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of America to designate the body of water off his city as the Gulf of Weymouth, a good-natured public relations announcement that resulted in funds raised for charity.

 

“I thank Bob for his tireless advocacy for the City of Weymouth, one he’s seen through both good times and bad. Through effective leadership, responsive constituent services, and a dogged approach toward campaigning, he has demonstrated how Republicans may compete successfully in cities. He is an irreplaceable friend and mentor to countless Republican activists who have learned what public service is all about,” said MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale.

 

“Bob has been a loyal public servant to Weymouth and the South Shore for decades. I wish him a restful retirement from public service and much happiness in his future endeavors,” said Janet Fogarty, Massachusetts Republican National Committeewoman and resident of Weymouth. “I first met Bob while helping his Senate campaign in 1992, and he has remained a close friend. Bob has strengthened the Republican Party both in Weymouth and across the South Shore where our Party is the strongest it has been in years. His service as Mayor and State Senator embodies the virtues of the Massachusetts Republican Party: putting residents first, honoring our veterans, and delivering critical services through effective leadership in local government.”
